The old man and the sea tells the story of a battle between an aging experienced fisherman santiago and a large marlin. We also meet a boy who is dear friends with the old man. He is a fisherman who has not caught a fish in 84 days.

Finally once the fish is alongside the skiff santiago harpoons it. He is so unlucky that his young apprentice manolin has been forbidden by his parents to sail with him and has been told instead to fish with successful fishermen. On the coast of cuba near havana an old widowed fisherman named santiago has been unable to catch a fish for 84 days.

The old man plans where he will set his baits then sets them. Carefully tying the marlin to the side of his boat santiago feels pride in his feat. The story centers on an aging fisherman who engages in an epic battle to catch a giant marlin.

Santiago has to do battle not only with the fish but also with the elements as he faces the sun hurts his eyes and the night too cold for comfort.
